Episode Notes

How did slavery end in Brazil? Were enslaved people freed out of benevolence, or for less altruistic reasons? What happened to them following abolition?

Our guest, Rodolpho Camargo, shares two perspectives on the end of slavery in Brazil. First, he shares the simplified version of the Golden Law often taught to Brazilian children, then explains the actual unfolding of events surrounding the abolition of slavery in Brazil.

Rodolpho opens with his perspective on international exchanges as an English teacher in Brazil and a former Fulbright teacher in America. At 11:30 in the podcast, he explains the history of the end of slavery in Brazil, and discusses how the ideas of race and demographics in Brazil are always in question.
